We each individually have the power to change what mathematics “is” for a group of students.
What we bring into the classroom is what gets deemed “mathematics”.
It is your choice. You are the expert in the room. You can challenge and change their views.
And since whatever is in the room is “math”, we don’t always need to be saying, “Pinecones are math! The spirals make Fibonacci sequences!” Nature was math long before a European named it. Don’t take away Nature’s sovereignty like that.
It is up to us to give space to, and thereby honour, different ways of doing mathematics.
